Strobe Lights the brightest flashing warning light you could have

Something that was in use as long ago as 1911 on steamships you would think had no place in today's world. Well, you would be wrong. were used as a kind of mechanical failure warning sign on the ships, and the first documented use was from a Royal Navy seaman's manual. A Strobe Light unit is a piece of history in the modern world

Generally a flash is around 200 microseconds. Now that is slow, but they can be programmed to flash at a slower or faster rate, making them more versatile as emergency lighting. A on continuous mode can give a very high intensity light that is difficult to ignore. A Strobe light unit provides an excellent type of hazard warning, especially for stationary vehicles. Where you will see a LED lightbar with traffic advisors, take down lights and alley lights; these are not particularly effective when the vehicle is stationary at the roadside on open highway.

The strobe is a flashing light that goes on and off at regular intervals. In school room experiments a strobe is often directed at spinning disk and the timing of the flash adjusted apparently "stopping" the disk. But an incandescent bulb does not last very long if it is constantly switched on and off which is the reason the rotating reflector was necessary in the light beacons. This of course requires a motor which uses power and that as well as the wasted heat generated by halogen lamps is very power hungry. This is where the comes in.

LEDs are semi-conductors whose production of light is not from resistance to current but rather a quality of electrons passing through the diode in the direction of the current. (If you tried wiring a diode the other way the current wouldn't flow and no light would shine.)  LEDs have undergone a lot of development in recent years and this is where the has been such a success.

LEDs do not produce wasteful heat. For this reason they use a fraction of the electrical power required to run an incandescent strobe with a rotating beam. In addition LEDs can be made to switch off and on constantly without suffering any degradation. They have been made bright enough these days to be visibly lighting up in direct sunlight.  In addition they have a very long life. They can be found to be still burning after 25,000 hours and 100,000 hours is not unlikely. Thus the has become the sought after emergency beacon of choice for all modern day emergency vehicles.

A does not have to rotate in order to be effective. It is bright enough to give warning in both forward and toward the rear. And its flashing pattern can be changed at will, flashing on and off from many times a second to just a few flashes a minute. With the control of the electronics such a pattern is easily programmable. It is generally found that faster flashes, say 3 or 4 times a second will denote a greater emergency that slower flashes.

So the for a services or engineering vehicle will be amber in colour and will flash on for a second and then off for 2 for example, which automatically demands attention and caution but the almost leisurely pace is not an indication of any emergency. This is not true of a rapidly flashing red which demands instant attention and urgency. This of course is an ambulance or other emergency vehicle in motion and it would be best to move over and let them pass.

If you see a blue, or a blue and red rapidly flashing in your rear view you will have the sinking feeling of having been busted for some driving offense, nevertheless you will be inclined to slow down and move over to allow the law enforcement vehicle to pass or to pull you up. LED Strobe lights - the iconic yet very effective emergency vehicle light

Strobe lights are something we all instantly recognize whether it is from old police dramas on TV or seeing them on emergency vehicles today. Strobe Lights one of the most effective hazard warnings a vehicle can have

Why are strobe lights used in emergency situations? The main reason is they are highly visible. Any emergency vehicle needs to be seen and the strobe lights are very easily seen from some distance. With a 360-degree visibility, the strobe lights can be seen whatever way you approach, whether it is from the side, rear or straight-ahead. There are light bar units that offer this same visibility but the strobe is a popular choice, as they tend to be very cost effective.

The stroboscopic light to give it its full name had been round for many years. Although there is some controversy and debate as to when it was actually invented. The first written record of the use of strobe lights is in a seaman's manual for the Royal Navy in 1911. Some say that strobe lights were invented by Dr Harold Edgerton of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1926. It is said that he studied the effects of high-speed flashes in photography, which eventually led to his invention of ultra-high-speed stop-action photography in 1931.

Whoever and whenever the strobe lights were invented they have been invaluable to emergency services personnel over the years. Light bars and LED lighting units have in the main replaced the single beacon strobe that used to be seen on police and indeed other emergency vehicles. However, there is still a place for the beacon strobe lights and they are still on sale from many different suppliers. Whilst the strobe lights in use today are more likely to be halogen and LED, their effect is the same.

A slowly rotating strobe is a highly visible hazard warning and as such is still very popular with the police, fire departments and medical teams. There is a saying 'If it isn't broke don't fix it' and that is so true of the strobe. With the advances in technology, the strobe lights are even more effective as they are brighter and cheaper to use. Any LED strobe light is a good investment as it will be reliable, easily maintained and cause less drain on a vehicles battery than any other light type. strobe lights are often used in other areas as well, but in a more fun or decorative way.

Strobe lights are a common sight in nightclubs and some bars, as they can be set to flash in time with the music. Of course, strobe lights can still be used in photography and to highlight show vehicles and draw our attention to something. The fact that strobe lights are still in use shows that they are highly effective at what they do. Whilst we may not have the single rotating strobe on the police vehicles now, there is still a place for strobe lights as additional hazard warning on vehicles.

Question by mattysmom: Anyone ever try those strobe light evictors-are they effective? Will an ordinary high powered strobe work?
I have squirrels in the attic and wanted to get rid of them before sealing damage they have done. Anyone ever use these Squirrel Evictor strobes? I was wondering if an ordinary strobe light of the same wattage would work- the only thing is, I only have yellow.

Hello Matty,

This is a good question and one we considered when we developed the Squirrel Evictor Strobe Light. First, the clear lens allows more light to penetrate the desired area and the proprietary bulb that we use is much more powerful than an ordinary disco type strobe light. Second, it pulses at a slower rate and is so annoying it actually makes you sick at your stomach when viewed in a totally dark room.

Because I had a squirrel infestation in the attic crawl space of my own home for 25 years......my attic became a one of our many test locations. I installed ( 3 ) MB10Ks 4 years ago and have been "squirrel free" ever since.
