Strobe Lights one of the most effective hazard warnings a vehicle can have

Why are strobe lights used in emergency situations? The main reason is they are highly visible. Any emergency vehicle needs to be seen and the strobe lights are very easily seen from some distance. With a 360-degree visibility, the strobe lights can be seen whatever way you approach, whether it is from the side, rear or straight-ahead. There are light bar units that offer this same visibility but the strobe is a popular choice, as they tend to be very cost effective.

The stroboscopic light to give it its full name had been round for many years. Although there is some controversy and debate as to when it was actually invented. The first written record of the use of strobe lights is in a seaman's manual for the Royal Navy in 1911. Some say that strobe lights were invented by Dr Harold Edgerton of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1926. It is said that he studied the effects of high-speed flashes in photography, which eventually led to his invention of ultra-high-speed stop-action photography in 1931.

Whoever and whenever the strobe lights were invented they have been invaluable to emergency services personnel over the years. Light bars and LED lighting units have in the main replaced the single beacon strobe that used to be seen on police and indeed other emergency vehicles. However, there is still a place for the beacon strobe lights and they are still on sale from many different suppliers. Whilst the strobe lights in use today are more likely to be halogen and LED, their effect is the same.

A slowly rotating strobe is a highly visible hazard warning and as such is still very popular with the police, fire departments and medical teams. There is a saying 'If it isn't broke don't fix it' and that is so true of the strobe. With the advances in technology, the strobe lights are even more effective as they are brighter and cheaper to use. Any LED strobe light is a good investment as it will be reliable, easily maintained and cause less drain on a vehicles battery than any other light type. strobe lights are often used in other areas as well, but in a more fun or decorative way.

Strobe lights are a common sight in nightclubs and some bars, as they can be set to flash in time with the music. Of course, strobe lights can still be used in photography and to highlight show vehicles and draw our attention to something. The fact that strobe lights are still in use shows that they are highly effective at what they do. Whilst we may not have the single rotating strobe on the police vehicles now, there is still a place for strobe lights as additional hazard warning on vehicles.

Question by mattysmom: Anyone ever try those strobe light evictors-are they effective? Will an ordinary high powered strobe work?
I have squirrels in the attic and wanted to get rid of them before sealing damage they have done. Anyone ever use these Squirrel Evictor strobes? I was wondering if an ordinary strobe light of the same wattage would work- the only thing is, I only have yellow.

Hello Matty,

This is a good question and one we considered when we developed the Squirrel Evictor Strobe Light. First, the clear lens allows more light to penetrate the desired area and the proprietary bulb that we use is much more powerful than an ordinary disco type strobe light. Second, it pulses at a slower rate and is so annoying it actually makes you sick at your stomach when viewed in a totally dark room.

Because I had a squirrel infestation in the attic crawl space of my own home for 25 years......my attic became a one of our many test locations. I installed ( 3 ) MB10Ks 4 years ago and have been "squirrel free" ever since.

We have made a huge effort to create the most effective and durable product on the market. The Squirrel Evictor Strobe Light evicts squirrels even when they have occupied an attic or crawl space for 40 years.

Why Use A Strobe Light On Your Vehicle?

Many people wonder why they should use a strobe light system on their vehicle. They are effective, they are easy to install, they are easy to replace and they are very cost effective. The importance of a Strobe Light on an emergency vehicle should never be underestimated

Emergency response vehicles whether they are police, fire or EMT vehicles need to have a strobe light to warn and inform other road users of their imminent approach or the fact the vehicle is stationary at a scene. A strobe light because of its high visibility is ideal as a hazard warning sign to other road users. It's fair to say that a strobe light on a vehicle can help in saving lives. The lives it can save are not only the victims at the scene but the lives of the first responders at the scene. A strobe light gives 360 degree light and is highly visible in all conditions.

The strobe light dates back over 75 years. Its inventor Harold Eugene Edgerton used the first flashing strobe (stroboscope) as he discovered it was ideal in the use of the study of moving objects. The word strobe comes from the Greek strobos meaning "act of whirling" The strobe light itself deploys a flash energy of 10 to 150 joules, and the discharge, or flash rate can be as short as a few milliseconds. strobe lights have a flash output of several kilowatts, and the larger strobe lights can be used in a continuous mode, which gives an extremely intense light.

A strobe light is incredibly versatile and although they are often though of only in conjunction with emergency vehicles or hazard warning on vehicles they do have other uses. The strobe light is only one part of an emergency vehicles emergency warning system. Most emergency vehicles will have combinations of strobe light, siren and possibly even a light bar on the vehicle. The more visible the vehicles are the safer the teams are themselves. I wouldn't suggest a cigatette light plug cuz that lamp draws a lot of amps. the leads would be better suited as a direct-wire (hard-wire) application. make sure you put a fusable link in the positive side.

A Strobe Light is the most effective warning you will see

You will have heard the term 'strobe light' used many times, mostly in conjunction with police vehicles. The strobe light may seem a simple thing, but the technology behind it is fairly complex, which makes it still valid to use today. There are modern LED versions of strobe lights and they are very effective, and these are taking the place of the more outdated strobes. We do tend to associate strobe lights with emergency vehicles and in the main they are used in such circumstances.

Versions of a strobe light could be found in our household alarm systems. An intruder alarm may have a rotating strobe light on the external of the house, to show the alarm has been activated. Some emergency lighting systems in buildings have strobe lights to illuminate exits and to act as a visible warning that the alarm has been activated. Whatever situation the strobe light is used there is no mistaking it as a warning. We all recognize the slowly rotating strobe as an indicator of some kind of emergency.

So are there any other places you will see a strobe light? They are used in clubs for lighting effects and they are great used with different colors and smoke to create that heavy atmosphere for dancing. The strobe light is used on construction vehicles and there are portable strobe light units that can be kept in a vehicle to be used in case of emergency. There are some medical personnel that would need such a strobe light such as doctors or specialist nurses on call.

In general, a strobe light is used along with a siren and other emergency vehicle lighting. This may seem excessive but there really can't be too much lighting on an emergency vehicle. They need to be seen in all light conditions from total darkness to very bright sunlight. The vehicles also need to be seen in all weather conditions from good to very bad with poor visibility. The motion of a strobe light makes it highly visible which is especially good on stationary vehicles.

LED strobe light units are now more popular as they are virtually maintenance free, cause relatively little drain on vehicle battery life and they are very reliable. Long gone are the days when any emergency vehicle had a single rotating strobe atop the vehicle. The main thing about emergency lighting on first response vehicles is it keeps the personnel and us safe. We know when the emergency vehicle is approaching or is stationary ahead, and this serves to protect the people at the scene and ourselves.
