Strobe Lights – The Flashing Light Used in Accident Prevention
The high intensity light that keeps on flashing throughout the night in tall towers to enable the pilots to avoid collision with them is emitted by strobe lights which have become a dying breed due to the invasion of the market by the more energy efficient light emitting diode. This is a type of xenon light that is able to discharge high intensity. The duration of the flash is very short amounting to a few milliseconds.
The most frequent application they are used is their usage as warning lights to pilots. The advantage with these lights is that they could be used even in daytime due to their high intensity lights. One disadvantage with them is that they could not be used in urban areas where there are lots of people, as the high intensity of light could become a light pollution. The biggest advantage of using strobe lights is their low maintenance. The strobes last a longer time than the tungsten filament bulbs. There are two varieties of strobes in use for this purpose. For a structure that is 200 to 500 ft in height, a medium intensity one is sufficient while for one that is taller it should be a high intensity one.
Another application of strobe lights is the aircraft. These are lights used to avoid collusion that consist of lights on the wing tips, landing lights and white beacons. Most of these are strobe lights. Warning strobe lights are used in police vehicles and fir fighting vehicles too. The all use them for the same purpose of warning other road users to take care as the road may be obstructed by the particular vehicle that emits the light signal.
Dancing floors are another place these strobe lights are used. The flashing lights with high intensity make the already glittering dancing floors more colorful. They use lights of different colors for the purpose. This craze began in the early sixties and is still being popular. To obtain the different colors from the white xenon light filters of different colors are used. Party floors bars and wedding receptions are also using these to enhance the decorative effects. In short they could be used in any event where glittery is the order of the day.
Though the strobe lights are on the way out giving way for the light emitting diode that is cheaper to maintain and uses little energy still there are places it is preferred. It will be in use for many years to come. Even though much emphasis is focused on the LED improvements are being done to the strobe lights too. Still many manufacturers produce strobe lights as vehicle accessories. It is a good idea to carry one of these in your vehicle. In case of a breakdown occurring on the highway you have the option to warn the other road users of the situation and prevent a possible accident. Though the vehicle has its waning lights these lights could be seen from a distance unlike the vehicle's own warning lights.
